Celebrating Cultural Diversity

Over the last month Percepta have been celebrating cultural diversity in the workplace, taking the opportunity to embrace the many different cultures that make Percepta a great place to work.

As part of the celebration of cultural diversity, we participated in A Taste of Harmonywhere our teams were encouraged to bring in a dish that represents team members’ cultural background. A Taste of Harmony is a great idea because not only does it make everyone aware of the many cultures that compose the workplace, but it also gives participants a chance to taste and experience different foods.

Leading up to A Taste of Harmony, Percepta ran smaller day-to-day events to provide a little bit more information about various cultures. We ran a daily quiz over 19 days that was aimed at fun and education. The question topics ranged from religion, language, and gender to poverty, geography, literacy, flags, and cultural symbols.

For one week we featured a recipe-a-day from around the world. Members of our teams contributed recipes from their cultural backgrounds. Everyone was challenged to have a go at making the dishes and bringing them in to try.

Coloured posters were used to encourage everyone to write down the languages they speak, the country they would most like to visit, and their favourite food.

Embracing cultural diversity in the workplace is the cornerstone of good business in today’s multicultural Australia. It makes sense, it’s the right thing to do, and it has a strong business case associated with combining efforts and perspectives from different people, often with extraordinary experiences.

What are your thoughts on cultural diversity? Does your workplace do anything to celebrate and embrace different cultures?
